We are proud to announce the completion of a 2-year project to review and move the library’s music collections.
In collaboration with the Music Department, library staff moved current music books to the Wyndham Robertson Library building, after removing items which were outdated and unused. Music scores are available in Presser Room 101. The former Erich Rath Music Library space, dating back to 1971, has become a much-needed ensemble rehearsal room for Hollins music.
By the numbers
- Reviewing 10,000 items: 2 years, 13 library and music faculty and staff.
- Moving 2,600 books across campus: 2 days, 6 library staff, 50 cart trips.
- Shifting 57,000 books to create space in the library: 8 weeks, 4 student employees.

How can I access the music collection?

Search all music collection items in OneSearch, then log in to request pickup (students) or delivery (faculty/staff).

- Why were books deselected?
Libraries match the changing needs of their community. Music librarian Maryke Barber worked with the music faculty to determine which items were out of date, not aligned with the curriculum, and not needed by Hollins musicians or the Roanoke community. - Will new books be added to the music collection?
Yes! New music books are added to the library every year; last year, we added over 50 new titles. - What happened to the deselected items?
Deselected books were donated for resale by TAP (Total Action for Progress: a Roanoke non-profit organization). Deselected scores can be found on the “Free to a Good Home” shelves in Presser: 107, 110 and in the first-floor hallway.
